Another Month of Reading in the Books

Well, this last month has been absolutely insane and I've gotten almost no reading done. I've started a few books and I've stared at the stack of library books by my bed, but I haven't made much headway. We have had a LOT going on and reading has unfortunately fallen by the wayside. I'd like to say it's going to get easier.. but I don't see any extra reading time in my future for this month.

But I've got a few to link up with Jana and Steph!

One of Us is Lying // Karen McManus
Rating: 3/5

One day, 5 students walk into detention and only 4 survive. Sounds like a good thriller, right? Well, not so much. I thought it was going to be more YA thriller than it was. I figure out the "twist" about halfway through but overall, it was a quick and easy read. I just expected a little more based on the Goodreads reviews.

The Hate U Give // Angie Thomas
Rating: 5/5

I can't even explain how passionate I am that everyone needs to stop what they're doing and read this book. I think I tweeted and Instagram storied about it so many times people were tired of hearing me! I laughed, cried, smiled, got really angry and felt every emotion there is to feel. I will sum this up very briefly - Starr is a black teenager who grew up in a "rough" neighborhood but goes to school on the "white" side of town. During spring break, she and her friend are pulled over and he is shot in the back by a police offer. The story focuses on the aftermath and how Starr learns about her history, how to manage her feelings and her other relationships and find who she is as a person.

This is coming out as a movie in October and you should absolutely read it before you see it!

Not That I Could Tell // Jessica Strawser
Rating: 3/5

Meh. Again, I expected more of a thriller than this was. It was more of a story about a neighborhood and how everyone interacts while one of them is missing. Personally, I think I would have freaked out a little more if my neighbor went missing after spending the night drinking around the firepit but these ladies seemed to move on pretty quickly. But, I didn't fully expect the ending so it did get me there!

Currently reading:

Crazy Rich Asians // Kevin Kwan

I should be finishing this in the next two days. So far, it's a winner!

This Could Hurt: A Novel // Jillian Medoff

I'm having a lot of trouble caring about this book so who knows if it will get read before its due date.

I loved The Hate U Give and really enjoyed Not That I Could Tell more than I thought I would.

I could not, however, get through Crazy Rich Asians!

I loved The Hate U Give. I also loved One of Us Is Lying- although I didn't go into it expecting a thriller so I imagine that influenced our individual feelings :) I couldn't get through Crazy Rich Asians. I'd like to, but it was A LOT of characters and stories...

THUG was so important. I loved it, but loved more-so that it was written and has gained so much popularity. I am excited to read One of Us Is Lying soon. :) XO - Alexandra
